Biography[]

Career[]

Owning a Kong[]

DK Circus

Mario watches Donkey Kong's circus act.

Before the invasion of Stanley's greenhouse, Mario was the owner of the ape Donkey Kong I, and also operated an annual circus at the zoo, where he would whip the ape into doing humiliating tricks like juggling pineapples while balancing on a barrel, and would laugh at him whenever he dropped a pineapple or got hit by fire. One day, having enough of Mario's abuse, the ape escaped from the zoo, rescuing his captured girlfriend, and retreated to the park.

Mario as a soldier.

In Mario's Bombs Away, Mario-a soldier in this game- was on a mission to carry a bomb to his troops on the other side of the screen. The enemy is waiting on the trees in his path, so he must keep his bomb away from their torches. One of his comrades is the heavy smoker, who is a slacker that carelessly tosses burning cigarettes into a stream of spilled oil, so he must also keep it from igniting on the ground. When he reaches the other side, he must carefully pass the bomb to his buddy, who will toss it on one of the five trees. After five bombs are passed, they will explode on the enemy, rewarding the player with bonus points. The game ends when there are three "misses" (ie. Mario's own bomb comically detonates in his face as well as blows up his outpost). True to the game's wartime jungle setting, there is an alarm monkey serving as this unit's time function.

In Mario's Cement Factory, Mario had to move cement from hoppers into cement trucks by putting them on conveyor belts. The conveyor belts can hold three hoppers. If the hopper overflowed, some cement could land on a worker, making Mario lose a life. Mario could move by using an elevator, but if he moved when the elevator was not there, he fell and lost a life. If Mario stayed on the elevator for too long, he could be crushed, or he could fall and lose a life; there were safe zones to circumvent that.

Carpenter[]

Mario and Pauline were busy talking about their future, since they couldn't stop thinking about it ever since Luigi brought it up. As they did, they didn't notice the truck at the red light nearby, and proceeded to joke around with each other. Donkey Kong was starting to wonder if revenge was the right answer, but bad memories of humans were constantly running through his mind as he pondered what to do, until he heard a familiar voice. Mario was laughing loudly at one of Pauline's jokes, and had caught the hearing of Donkey Kong through the walls of the truck, which finally made him snap.

DK ripped open the back of the truck, roared, and, before Pauline knew what was happening, picked her up and headed to a nearby Construction Site, intending to kill the woman. Mario fell to his knees, not knowing what to do, when he realized how much he loved Pauline, and got back up, filled with rage. With an angered heart, he proceeded to get into the Construction site. Mario could jump over obstacles such as the barrels Donkey Kong throws. Mario also used hammers as items. Jumping can be used to jump over obstacles only, not to destroy them, as is a prominent feature in later games.

DonkeyKongJr

In Donkey Kong Jr., Mario appeared as the antagonist, having captured Donkey Kong as revenge for the Kong kidnapping Pauline and holding him in a cage. The protagonist Donkey Kong Jr. rescued his father in the end. After moving all six keys into their keyholes, during the Skirmish on Stage 4, the platform (and cage) disappeared, and Mario and Donkey Kong both fell down. Donkey Kong Jr. caught Donkey Kong, but Mario just hits the ground. Donkey Kong Jr. carried his father off-screen as Mario got up and ran after them, only to be kicked right back down by Donkey Kong, forcing him to flee.

Plumber[]

In Mario Bros., Mario and Luigi were now working as Plumbers, trying to make a living in the world. Then they got a call that informed them that pipes in the sewers were clogged, and that they had to go and unclog it.

Upon reaching the sewers, instead of encountering clogged pipes as they originally expected, they instead encountered crabs, flies, and turtles. The critters didn't seem overly hostile, but after almost getting bit by one of them, the brothers had to jump into the platforms below the enemies, flipping them over and allowing the brothers to defeat them.
